| Head Of Woman
"HEAD OF" DOES NOT MEAN GOVERNING AGENT!
There are only two places in the entire Bible where it says man is head of the woman. I Cor. 11:2 KJV says "But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God". The Greek reads "the head of a woman the man.” The other place is Eph. 5:23 KJV, "For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church; and He is the savior of the body.” The Greek reads, "a man is head of the woman". There is no place in the Old Testament where it says man is head of woman. That was O T Jewish tradition. Paul found it necessary to enlighten the Corinthians (and us) about a New Testament precept.
I Cor.11:2 Paul praises the Corinthians for keeping new ordinances, traditions or precepts that replaced all the old traditions abolished by Christ. I Cor. 11:3 in the Greek starts out "But I wish you to know". The "but" connects the sentence to the previous one and contrasts newly taught traditions with the old. This is another new tradition or precept Paul wants them to know. The old tradition was the subservience of women. The new tradition restores gender equality that was present in creation.
Break down "the head of every man is Christ.” The word head is kephale, which means source or origin. Christ is the source of origin of every man, married, or unmarried, because He created them. He is the source of origin of every man, married, or unmarried, who is a believer because He is the source of origin of the church.
Break down the Greek "the head of a woman the man.” "A" used before a noun expresses the singleness of individual. "The" renders the modified word particular or individual. Therefore, we are talking about a particular individual woman and a particular individual man. Adam and Eve. Again, the word head is kephale and means the source of origin. The source of origin of A woman (Eve) is Adam, THE man.
Break down "the head of Christ is God.” Again, head is kephale and it means source of origin. Jesus Christ was eternally existent as part of the triune Godhead. However, He did not always exist as a human. God is the source of origin of the human, Jesus. Jesus is known as the Son of God, the only begotten Son of God. He was conceived by the power of The Most High, God. The Holy Spirit conveyed that power to Mary. The child was not called the son of Holy Spirit, but the Son of God. Therefore, God is the irrefutable source of origin of Christ the human.
Philippians 2:6-8 "Who also being in the FORM of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, But made himself of no reputation and took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of men and being found in fashion as man he humbled himself and became obedient unto death even the death of the cross." The word being means to begin quietly, i.e. to come into existence, be present or be at hand. The word "form" is a key word. It means through the idea of an adjustment of parts, shape. It comes from a base word meaning to get as a section or an allotment, a division or share, piece, portion. It means there was an adjustment of parts of the triune God. A section, portion, or piece divided or separated out from the form of God, departed from Him and began to exist as a human embryo in the womb of Mary. Jesus the human came out of the form of God.
One key word in both I Cor. 11:10 and Eph. 5:23 is the little word "of". Both verses say head "OF.” Not head "OVER.” Over is epi, it means super-imposition of time, place, order. If the word over had been used, then it would mean a man could superimpose a governing power over the woman's right to govern herself. Governing oneself is known as self-control! According to Webster's Collage Dictionary, Of" is a Greek prefix apo, meaning from, specifically derived from, coming from, resulting from, caused by or through. At a distance from, apart from, proceeding as a product from, derived from, separated from, relieved from, from the whole, made from, using a specified material. In Vine's Expository Dictionary Apo translates as "ek" or "ex" meaning out from. In Strong's concordance, Apo is under the word "from" which is Prim. Particle "off" meaning away from something near in various senses. Literally or figuratively, because of or from. Heb. 1:13 says "Christ, being in the brightness of His (God's) glory and the express image of His (God's) person..." The word brightness comes from two words one of which is the same prefix apo. It means off-flash, (effulgence) that is away from something near in various senses such as place, time, or relation. In composition, it is a prefix that usually denotes separation, departure, cessation, completion, and reversal. The word effulgence means radiance and splendor. The other part of brightness means to shine or beam forth. What this means is that in a brilliant off-flash, a part of the God head separated from God, departed from him and ceased to exist with him for a time. That is the part the Holy Spirit conveyed to Mary, who over shadowed her and implanted the precious embryo that grew in her womb to be the human Jesus. That process caused Jesus to be derived from, to come out from the form of God, the result being God was the Father of his only begotten Son. When the Word says, "the head of Christ is God" it means the source of origin of Christ, the human, is God.
Going to creation of Adam and Eve, the same process took place. God created Adam out of dust. He put him to sleep, separated out a part of Adam, his rib; it departed from him and therefore ceased to exist as part of him. God formed the woman out of that part of specified material. So when the Word says "and the head of a woman the man" it means the source of origin of the woman (Eve) was man (Adam).
Going to Christ as the head of every man, we already saw that he is the creator of all mankind. But how did he become head of the church? The same process as the other two. Out of his wounds came the blood. He died, and out of his side came the blood and the water. The blood, a specified material, left his body and it formed the living body of believers. The part that left him became the church. The source of origin of the church is Christ.
Conclusion
A) Jesus was a part of specified material that was separated out from God, was implanted into Mary's body, and there took the form of the man Jesus. B) Woman was a part of specified material that God separated out from man and formed into a woman. C) The flesh and blood was specified material that separated out from Jesus and it formed the church, the living body of Christ. All three Christ, Woman, and The Church were made of specified material that was separated out of the original and became a separate identity.
Most Bibles will cross reference this phrase, "the head of woman is the man" to Gen. 3:16, that says "your desire will be for your husband and he shall rule over you." This is supposed to be proof that head means a governing authority. It should be cross referenced to Gen. 2:21-23, clearly showing that head is the source of origin. That is the ONLY kind of head there is in creation.
I Cor: 11:8,9,11,12. Vs. 8 "For the man is not of the woman, but the woman of the man. Vs. 9 “Neither was the man created for the woman, but the woman for the man." This is referring to the original, particular individual man and woman. Adam and Eve. The man did not rescue the woman from aloneness and incompleteness; it was the woman who was made the man to rescue him. Vs. 11 "Nevertheless, neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.”
Nevertheless = albeit, even though; notwithstanding, in spite of.
Neither = not, none, nothing, without.
Without = at a space, separately, apart from, by self.
Even though, or in spite of the fact it was true in creation that man was created first and the woman was made for man means nothing now, In the Lord they are not separate or apart from each other. Because vs. 12 "For as the woman is of the man, even so is man also by the woman; but all things of God." Ever since the time of creation when one woman came from one man, man must come out the womb of woman. Both are of God, he has no favored gender because in Him there is neither male nor female; they are all one.
No headship is even remotely implied because man was created before woman.
Head coverings, shows submission to man?
Man claims that because the woman came out of man, and she is the glory of man, I Cor. 11:5,13, & 7 means she should cover her head to show her submission to her head. They claim her head is the man, not God.
I Cor. 11:4,7 If a man prays or prophesies with his head covered he dishonors his head (God) because he is the image and glory of God. 11:5,13 if a woman prays and prophesies with her head uncovered it is not appropriate because that dishonors her head (God). Why does it dishonor God? The following verses show the woman has the glory of God on her just like the man. Verse 7b the woman is the glory of the man because she was formed out of him. Verse 15 her hair is a glory to her.
Gen: 1:26 Male and female made in God's image and likeness, so both had the same glory of God. He made them both.
II Cor.3:18 ALL believers in Christ have unveiled faces and reflect his glory. All believers in Christ are being transformed into his image with ever increasing glory.
11 Cor. 4:4-6 the light that shines out of darkness and in our hearts gives us the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus.
As a believer, she has Jesus glory because she was formed out of his shed blood. Just like the male believer was.
It dishonored God for her to pray and prophecy uncovered because she had not just one glory of God's image, and the glory from being formed out Jesus shed blood but 2 other glories as well. She was to cover up the glory of the man and the glory of her hair. This was to show her submission to Christ only as her head.
Man's theology saying the covering was to show her subordination to her husband is blasphemous idolatry, because it replaces God and Jesus with a mere man.
I Cor.11:10 "For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels." The translations that say of "authority" or even a "sign of authority" are wrong. The correct word is power.
Power = exousia = in the sense of ability, privilege, (subj) force, capacity, competence, freedom, delegated influence, authority, jurisdiction, liberty, power, right, and strength. Base of exousia comes from exon.
Exon = neuter present tense, (genderless, on going action). Means it's an
ongoing power that does not cease to exist with time and it is to continue
to function in public.
IT MEANS THAT THE EXOUSIA POWER THAT WAS ON HER CAME TO HER FROM GOD BY THE HOLY SPIRIT ON THE DAY OF PENTECOST. SHE WAS TO FUNCTION IN EVERY GIFT AND IN THE SAME POWER THAT MAN DID IN THE PUBLIC ASSEMBLY WITH THE MEN.
The passage makes it clear that woman was no longer under Old Testament subservience to man according to tradition. She was set free from man made subservience and restored to her original state. However, man has interpreted it to keep her bound to subordination to man. It is idolatry.
Last phrase "because of the angels.” The angels were confused or at the least perplexed! Angels are surrounding us, watching us, observing us. I believe this because of I PET. 1: 10-12. "Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you, searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ who was in them did signify, when he testified beforehand, the sufferings of Christ and the glory that should follow. Unto whom it was revealed that, not to themselves but unto us they did minister the things which now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you WITH the Holy Spirit sent down from heaven, which things the angels desire to look into." (KJV) Other translations use different wording rather than WITH the Holy Spirit, which gives a different view. The prophets knew that what they had prophesied about a coming Christ, His suffering, and the Holy Spirit that would come after him was not for them but for a future time. They wanted to know how and when it would happen. Now, after the Holy Spirit came, the gospel was preached and with it came all the manifestations of power and wonders. This gospel of salvation and all the manifestations of Holy Spirit power was something the angels had not seen before. Desire here means to set the heart upon, long for, and covet with passion. "Look" means to pear intently. They were intently, passionately, trying to understand how people could be saved and how all this power worked, and what the manifestations meant. Therefore, I believe there are 3 issues the angels were perplexed about.
1. Before, women were powerless, non-participants in the Jewish synagogue and forced subservience to men in OT distinguished men from women.
Now women were active participants and had all the power men had and were free to use it. No longer subservient.
2. Vs. 14 says it was a shame for men to have long hair.
This word shame means advertising vile passions such as transvestism, transsexualism, homosexuality, or anything effeminate.
3. Vs 6, 15 talks about shaved, shorn, uncovered, and long hair for a woman. Shaved heads was sign of a temple prostitute. If she had a shaved head in the church, it would dishonor Christ, because that would identify her as a prostitute, when she was new creature in Christ because of this salvation gospel. In that culture women with uncovered heads was also a shame. The word shame for her means a breach of cultural decorum. With all of that, plus the women demonstrating all the exousia power in the assembly, the angels were confused.
Conclusion
"The woman should cover her head:"
(1) to demonstrate her submission to Christ who was her only rightful head through the preaching of the gospel;
(2) to cover up the glory of man and the glory of her hair,
(3) to demonstrate what gender she was while the angels observed the Holy Spirit operating in both genders. It was to minimize the confusion for the angels. |
